Since an area rug does not extend to the walls, they are often used to anchor furniture in a space. They are a terrific alternative to carpeting, as they’re easier to clean and to switch one out if you want to redecorate later.

When it comes to decorating your home using area rugs, there are some important rules to remember:

  • When selecting an area rug, make sure that it fits under all the key furniture. If this isn’t possible, it’s okay to have the front legs of furniture on the rug and the back legs off. However, all smaller pieces should be entirely on the rug.
  • In a dining room, the rug should be large enough for the table as well as the chairs, even when they’re pulled out from the table.
  • Make sure that any heavily trafficked areas are fully covered. When people are walking on them, they shouldn’t have one foot on and one foot off.
  • Ideally, you should have a rug centered in the room, with the same amount of floor space on all sides of your rug.
  • While it’s tempting to make your best rug a focal point of the house, avoid placing expensive rugs in areas where there might be spills or accidents.
